How are students admitted to your University?
Izmir University of Economics admits students according to the central placement carried out by ÖSYM on the basis of the ÖSS scores. Applicants make their preferences according to the quota stated in the ÖSYM guidelines and are placed accordingly.

Will you accept students in an additional quota?
If the quota is not filled following the initial placement procedures, then an additional quota may be implemented. These procedures are determined and updated by ÖSYM.

What is the language of instruction in the University?
Izmir University of Economics is an English-medium University.  Furthermore, second languages such as French, Italian, German, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Portuguese and Greek are offered to undergraduates in the 4-year programs.

What are the transfer requirements?
Students wishing to transfer from another Turkish university must:

  • have completed at least one semester in their departments (excluding the preparatory program),
  • have successfully fulfilled all their course requirements,


Students wishing to transfer from foreign universities must:

  • have completed at least one academic year in their department (excluding the preparatory program),
  • have successfully fulfilled all their course requirements,

Furthermore, transfer applicants must have a final score of 60 out of 100 (2,40 out of 4), or the equivalent.

Is it possible to transfer within departments at your University?
For 4-year undergraduate programs, it is possible to transfer after the completion of the freshman year, providing that requirements are fulfilled.

What is the annual tuition fee? Are there any payment alternatives?
The 2008-2009 tuition fees for 4-year undergraduate programs is 7,650 USD (Including VAT). English preparatory school students pay the same fee.

Dual Diploma students pay the tuition fee of the semesters they spend in our university to IUE, they pay the tuition fee of the semesters they spend abroad to the related university.

Tuition fees can be paid in two equal instalments. The first semester payment is made upon registration and the second semester payment is made before the Spring term course registrations between the dates indicated on the Academic Calendar.

The students have the chance of taking education loan from Akbank( Balçova-izmir and İzmir-Commercial Branch), Denizbank (Karabağlar-izmir Branch) and Vakıfbank.

Will the annual tuition remain the same in the upcoming years?
Tuition fees are determined annually by the Board of Trustees and announced.

May I be exempted from English Preparatory School Program if I get a sufficient score from TOEFL or similar exams?
The documents of the students who get sufficient scores from such internationally acclaimed exams such as TOEFL, IELTS or FCE are evaluated by the School of Foreign Languages and will be exempted from the preparatory school program.

Can I begin the freshman year after completing half a year in the English preparatory program?
A student must complete the preparatory school program in order to begin the freshman year.

Are there double major and minor programs?
Izmir University of Economics offers “double major programs” to outstanding students in the 4-year undergraduate programs.
Furthermore, “minor programs” are also available for successful students who want to specialize on certain subjects.

Are there any internship options available for students?
According to the existing framework of the courses, internship options are available within companies that are affiliated with the Izmir Chamber of Commerce. 4-year undergraduate students have to complete a minimum 4-week or 8-week internship. The duration of internship varies according to the characteristics of the departments.

Will there be summer school?
The University offers summer school courses in order to increase academic capacity and productivity. Summer school is not mandatory.

Are there master and doctoral programs at the University?
Our University offers Graduate Studies in "MBA-Business Administration", "Financial Economics", "Administration and Developing Administrators", "European Studies", "Logistics Management", "Design Studies"; and PhD Program in Business Administration at Graduate School of Social Sciences. Graduate School of Natural Sciences offers Graduate Programs in "Applied Statistics", "Financial Mathematics" and “Information Technologies”. The application dates to Graduate and PhD Programs are shown in "Registration Admission Calendar".

What is the language of instruction in graduate and doctoral programs? What are the class hours?
The language of instruction is English. The classes for the graduate programs are at 18:00-21:00 weekdays and on Saturdays. The doctoral program classes are held during the day.

Is an English preparatory program provided for those graduate students whose English is insufficient?
An English preparatory program is provided also for those students whose English is insufficient. This program is also conducted between 18:00 and 21:00.

What are the tuition fees for master and doctoral programs?
The tuition fees for the graduate programs are paid per credit hour. The credit hour fee for 2008-2009 academic year is 375 YTL (Including VAT). Again, the fee for the English preparatory program was 3500YTL (Including VAT).
The tuition fees are based on total course credit hours and are paid in two instalments. The first instalment should be paid at the beginning of the related semester. The second instalment should be paid for fall semester until December 15th, for spring semester until May 15th. The fees for the Doctoral program are:
For doctoral programs, until the completion and Qualification for the Doctoral programs there is an annual fee of 9.000 USD (Including VAT), and for those students who are completing their theses the fee is 4.500 USD (Including VAT) annually.

What are the requirements for the masters and doctoral programs?
I. Requirements For Graduate School Of Natural Sciences Graduate Programs :

  • To have graduated from an undergraduate (4-year) program
    To be holding minimum SAY 60 points from ALES(Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Exam) .
  • Or minimum 475 points from GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) that has international validity for Financial Mathematics Program, or minimum 650 points from “quantitative” part of GRE (Graduate Record Examination),
  • Or minimum 650 points from “quantitative” part of GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) that has international validity for Applied Statistics Program and Information Technologies Program,
  • To be successful in the scientific interview.
  • Approval of letter of intention about the reason of master education by the Board of Directors of the Graduate School
  • To bring at least one recommendatory letter


II. Requirements For Graduate School Of Social Sciences Graduate Programs
For MBA-Business Administration- European Studies-Financial Economics-Administration and Developing Administrators- Logistics Management Graduate Programs :

  • To have graduated from an undergraduate (4-year) program
  • To be holding minimum EA 60 points from ALES(Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Exam), or minimum 475 points from GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) that has international validity, or minimum 650 points from “quantitative” part of GRE (Graduate Record Examination).
  • To be successful in the scientific interview.
  • Approval of letter of intention about the reason of master education by the Board of Directors of the Graduate School
  • To bring at least one recommendatory letter

For Design Studies Graduate Programme :

  • To have graduated from an undergraduate (4-year) program
  • At least one recommendatory letter
  • A portfolio, which includes the written or project-based works of the candidate in the fields of fine arts and design. (student works, graduation project, graduation thesis, competitions, amateur works, etc.) (This regulation is valid primarily for the ones that have undergraduate diploma from fields of design.)
  • To fill in the form that includes the questions regarding the details of the work the candidate suggested making in the graduate program.
  • To have an acceptation from Graduate School Administrative Board for the letter of intent that is prepared for indicating the reason of attending a graduate program.
  • Being successful in the interview.
  • Bring at least one recommendatory letter


 III. Requirements for PH.D. Programs

  • An undergraduate degree (at least 4 years) OR a graduate degree from an accredited institution,
  • GPA of minimum 3.00 out of 4.00 or equivalence in undergraduate or graduate programs,
  • To be holding minimum EA 70 points from ALES(Academic Personnel and Graduate Education Exam) or minimum 500 points from GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) that is equivalent to ALES-EA; or minimum 685 points from “quantitative” part of GRE (Graduate Record Examination),
  • To be successful in scientific exam (written-oral)
  • To get adequate score from internationally valid exams such as TOEFL, IELTS, FCE etc or to be successful in English Proficiency Exam prepared and held by School of Foreign Languages of İzmir University of Economics.
  • Preparing statement of purpose provided that it is accepted by related Department Heads and Board of Directors of the Graduate School.

Is it possible to postpone military service if I register to master or doctoral programs?
Yes. The candidates have this right of postponing their military service during their education at master/doctoral programs.
